A Stormy Afternoon

I was sitting outside yesterday afternoon, enjoying a cup of tea and flicking through a beautiful book filled with images of working dogs from across Australia. It was quite hot, and a storm looked like it was building to the north-east. As I watched it grow I became fascinated with the light and colours that it was creating. The north-east sky was rich and black and very threatening. To the south-west, however, the sky was blue, lightly clouded and the afternoon sun was shining ever so brightly. The contrast and rich colouring this produced had me instantly reaching for the camera and snapping away.
The above photo of our Miniature Angus heifer, Cleopatra, shows the dark richness of the two different lights combined. It looks as though I've thrown several effects on the photo, but this is how it looked in real-life and the camera captured her perfectly. The bright, cheerful sun reflecting off one cheek, whilst the other half of the photo shows the dark shadows cast by the storm clouds.

Since discovering a love for photography, I find myself so much more "in tune" with the different lights that different seasons, weather and times of day produce. I love everything thing about photography, and am continue learning. The delight I feel when I discover some new technique or realise how to use the camera in different lighting situations is great. I think this new hobby of mine has surpassed my love of knitting, perhaps because I can enjoy photography all year round, verses knitting which is restricted to cooler weather.

What did you get up to on the weekend? I hope it was enjoyable!

  3. Hi Sarah, stunning photos and beautiful light! I agree, I look at the 'normal' things around me differently since discovering photography. I notice the light more than ever before and see beauty in things that years ago I wouldn't have noticed. It is a wonderful, accessible hobby. I hope you are having a good week so far!

  5. I've always loved the contrast of sunlight on trees with an incoming storm. We used to have willows lining a creek where I grew up, and the leaves turned over in the storm breeze, showing silver on the underside. It always looked amazing with black clouds piling up behind them. Your photos are gorgeous and it brings back memories of those trees to me. Beautiful Cleopatra!! I hope she doesn't mind the storms :) Wendy x

    1. That sounds gorgeous Wendy!
Cleopatra quite likes the rain, I think, unlike her little friend Dudley :-)
