Beautiful Autumn

I love being able to observe the changing seasons. Autumn has such a tranquillity about it - from the softened golden light to the pleasantly warm days and cool evenings. Perhaps it is the plenty that also comes with Autumn that also gives me a sense of calm - unless we're in drought (such as last season), there is usually plenty of feed on the ground for the livestock at this time of year which just gives my mind a rest from worrying about grass.
It's comforting to see the animals with full bellies and contented expressions - even if the sheep still stretch their necks through the fence. The old adage the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence seems to ring true for the Dorpers. Even though at the moment it's green, and lengthy, on both sides.

With the cooler days, baking has become a joy again and a baked dinner is a delight to look forward to when I know that the evening is going to get quite a chill in it.
I love being able to knit with wool instead of cotton, and have the option of layering my clothes. Leggings, socks and my chocolate shrug have been my choices of late. I'm aiming to eat at least two meals a week with good homemade bone broth in them all through the cold months this year. I find it so nourishing and beneficial, and a bowl of warm soup is such a comfort on a chilly night.

Autumn is by far my favourite season - what is yours?

I hope you've had a lovely long weekend. And if you celebrate Easter I hope it was filled with just the right amount of chocolates and hot cross buns.

  1. Beautiful post, as always Sarah. I was always fond of Spring but I'm beginning to think I like Autumn even more these days.

  3. Funny how tempting the grass is when it's growing the other side of the fence! I love autumn too, though every time the season changes, I enjoy the change.

  5. Autumn is definitely my favorite. I love the crisp air in the mornings and evenings, the smell of wood smoke as fires start up, ready for winter and the sense that things can be done and enjoyed without the relentless heat of summer!

  7. I have switched out from cotton yarn to wool yarn in the last week too. It feels so soft in comparison. Autumn light, just look at it there in your photos. Easily one of my favourite things about autumn.

  8. As usual, your photos are so beautiful. And I agree, Autumn is a gorgeous time of year, the heat and humidity of summer have eased and the evenings are much more comfortable. And I have to comment on your sheep, I can't believe you're able to keep them contained in just normal wire fencing. When we got ours, the whole 6 of them and the ram ran straight through the wire fences we had and led us a merry chase for about an hour, nearly making it to the road numerous times. Needless to say, we now have ring lock fencing over our whole property (all 7 acres of it!). I wouldn't get rid of our sheep now for anything, I could sit and watch them all day, and now we've got nearly 20 of them.

    1. Thank-you so much Cathy!
Because of our Lowlines, we have 5 strand barb on most fences which I think helps to keep the sheep in it. The lambs pop in and out though, so we have one paddock fenced in sheep mesh to keep them in, and also use at weaning time when sheep are more likely to push the fences. Otherwise I'm pretty lucky with what I can run the sheep in.
I love watching my sheep too - and don't they multiply quickly! x

    2. Yes, they certainly do - it doesn't help when you go out and buy 5 more on a Sunday (they were cheap...)

  9. Oh, look at the light in that first photo! There is something so beautiful about Autumn's light, at the beginning and ending of daylight. Autumn is by far my favourite season and its cool touch is so welcome after a long, hot Summer!
