Of Cheddar & Pompoms

It's been a week of cooler rainy days. I just love rainy weather. It's perfect for getting things done. Everything is more pleasant to do when the temperate drops a little. Of course if it goes back to super hot weather, I'll try not to complain. The proper summer heat is what brings our summer storms.

Amongst the regular routine, there are two things I have done this week that I consider worthy of writing about here. The first, is that I made my first block of Cheddar cheese. The photo above is of the curds just after they had been cut. Cheddar turned out to be a pretty time-consuming little cheese to make. I warned the curds when I was putting them into the hoop to be pressed that after 6 hours of cheese making, they'd better turn into a tasty cheese. The cheddar is now in the pantry, where it has to dry for up to four days before we'll slice it and put it into the cheese fridge to mature. We've only got to wait three months to find out how we went. (If indeed we make it that long! I give it a month, tops.)

The second thing I thought I would write about is my new knitting project.

I've actually restarted work on my Clara Bow Sweater, but I made a mistake and felt the urge to cast something on that I could actually finish in a short amount of time.
Hence my bright blue pompom hat. It's going to be a little bit quirky when it's finished, but I don't mind. I love pompoms, I love knitting fair isle, and something a little bit different is just what I need.
I'm having fun making it, thinking of what I'll be doing when I wear it, wondering how warm it will keep me, and also thinking of how best to photograph it when it's finished.
You can find the pattern and yarn I'm using, and my Ravelry notes here.

What have you been up to in your own patch?
Has it been cool, hot, wet or dry I wonder?
Have you any plans for the weekend?

I hope it is a good one!

Went with Archie my Chihuahua shopping first time since Christmas. It felt strange after staying in so much.

  3. That cheese looks so enticingly yummy, well done! And look forward to seeing your bobble hat too - I'm not brave enough to attempt fair isle. I tried it once and the reverse side was just a tight, tangled mess! Happy knitting 😊 xx

    1. Thank-you Gilly. When I first started working fair isle I had to be mindful of my tension, similar to being a beginner again :-) I've got the hang of it now and do enjoy it so :-)
      Enjoy the weekend! x

  7. Gorgeous post and pics. Oh I think that would be fab to make your own cheddar cheese. It takes such a lot of milk to make a kg doesn't it? Although I suspect you have plenty of milk :) We are enjoying summer at last .. but I'm hoping for some rain, just some mind you!

    1. Yes it does, 10 litres of milk = about 1 kilo of cheese. But you get lots and lots of whey too, which is supposed to be excellent for the garden, used like a fertiliser. The dogs love it too :-)
I hope you get that rain! x

  8. So glad to have found your blog after following along on Instagram. Your cheddar looks amazing! My husband and I love cheese and would love to be able to make our own. I taught myself to crochet last year and made my girls a bonnet each, the winters are long here so one can never have too many beanies. Looking forward to seeing your finished hat, I love the colours. x Dre
