Rainy Day Crafting

This morning began with the loudest clap of thunder waking me from the deepest sleep. I'd been woken like that countless times throughout the night, to thunder accompanied by very bright lightning, the sound of rain and wind and the occasional shake of the house when it was really loud. By early this morning I'd had enough, and decided it would be better to get up and have a cup of tea rather than trying to salvage the night any longer.
The day was very grey and quite cold. With the storm well and truly going on until late mid-morning, I ended up having an unplanned half-day off. When the thunder and lightning are so close by, we leave the computers and internet connection unplugged, to protect them from power surges. It turned out to be just what I needed. I wouldn't have given myself a day off today if I hadn't been forced too, but I was forced to and so, wearing winter clothes and feeling very out of place for an October day, I sat at the table and crafted with wool.

Tea is an essential to any crafting session, and I drank a cup whilst I darned in more ends than I cared to count on a recent knitting project (a secret one too, I'm afraid, for the next little bit!). Then I got started on my first ornament for the swap. I'd fallen in love with this Little House pattern, and despite the original calling for worsted weight yarn, I knitted mine up in DK. I've finished the house off this evening and am so happy with the final result - I think I might just want to make a few more! It's pictured above awaiting it's filling and roof to be put on. If it's sunny tomorrow I'll take a proper photo of it all finished, complete with a red ribbon to hang from the tree by.
I've been packing up Christmas Yarn Boxes all week and shipping them out as fast as I can so that you can start on your swap projects too. It's lovely hearing about what your plans for your ornaments and how much fun you're all having.

I've said it many times before, but I love rainy weather for creating. It's so cosy to sit inside while it's all grey and wet outside, making little things. Despite a very disturbed night, I'm grateful for the storm having come and staying around this morning, giving me the break I obviously needed.
Isn't it funny how things like that so often happen? Something comes along and gives you what you needed, even though you might not know that you needed it in the first place.

And on that note (that I don't even know if you can make sense of!), I'm off to squeeze in a little more knitting for the day. And perhaps a slice of Almost Apple Pie Cake.
I'd love to hear about what you've been making lately!

  6. Coincidentally it is raining here in the UK as well. Not a thunderstorm, we rarely get those, but a nice solid heavy rain. So I am having a cup of tea and trying to complete an online course that I started more than a year ago and kept putting off. Cup of tea and knitting breaks are a must though! :)
