The Weekend

Yesterday was hot and bothersome, with storm clouds rolling in of the afternoon and teasing us with little spits and spats. Away in the distance I could see smoke rising - the fire was a long way away, and the setting sun was lighting up that particular part of the sky. The smoke mingling with the storm clouds looked very impressive, and I was so happy I managed to capture it on camera.
Thinking it would not rain I had ventured up to the chicken pen without an umbrella, and let them all out for their afternoon forage.
The sky spit and spat, and I relocated to the shelter of the tractor shed, and just as I was complaining how hot and humid it was this evening, the sky opened properly. With the sound of distant thunder it bucketed. The chickens all ran for cover, but some of them couldn't find their way in. I went and reorganised them, locked them up and did the head count. By that time I was soaked, so I headed back to the house. It was the first time in a long time I've been out in a heavy downpour without an umbrella. Once I was thoroughly soaked I found I didn't mind it. The rain was cool and refreshing, delicious and clean when I held my face up to it. It was cold too, so a hot shower followed leaving the space of about an hour free from the usual afternoon activities, so I decided to get some knitting done. I've been happily knitting mug cosies all week, as they've been disappearing out of my shop almost as soon as I list them, which I love because at the moment they are the only thing I want to create, and there's only so many mug cosies I can have myself, isn't there?

I'd had to undo my knitting earlier in the day, however, due to being very tired after a horribly disturbed night. The smoke detectors kept going off every single time a bug went near them. Do you know how many bugs there are in North Queensland at night during the wet season? Hundreds. And these aren't just any ordinary smoke detectors. They're hard wired into the ceiling. They beep (more like scream) in unison with each other. By 4:30 am my nerves were shot, I had a headache and I was vacuuming bugs off the ceiling. The dogs were so upset by the noise that they wouldn't come back inside at first. Returning to bed as the sun was about to come up (5am), we all got a few more hours sleep before the detectors went off again. I was ready to attack them with a broom at that point, if I hadn't been too tired. Thankfully, they haven't gone off since and I didn't have to resort to the broom.

Today promises to be better with a cake* to bake for a visiting friend, more knitting planned and a beautiful start to the morning. The sun is shining and the grass is vividly green.

What have you planned for your weekend?
I hope you have a good one!

  1. What a terrible night. Our weekend is going to be crazy, I am barely going to be at home, but I am so excited about all the activities that we're going to do. IKEA, then babysitting my little niece, then visitng some family and I'll possibly do some teaching prep whilst doing that all and maybe knit a leg or two on my knitted hippo to (who at the moment is a bling quadruplegic and needs some work done on her so that she can live a full and happy life).

  3. When I lived in Singapore I used to enjoy being out in the rain, unless it was one of those really heavy tropical downpours, so refreshing. Hope you and your visitor enjoyed the cake you baked.

    1. Ugh - the bugs! I'm typing in the dark right now with candles light and the flood lights on outside to keep them out. I'm so glad they're only here for a short season! x
