The First Chicks of the Year

The first chicks of the year hatched three days ago. Two darling little Silkie chicks, set without planning permission by their mama, but I upon discovery I had to let her keep the eggs, and now I am so happy that I did as I watch her raise these two tiny babies. The hen, Miss Grey, is an old hand and an excellent broody. She excepts other chicks in broad daylight without question as needed, which makes her so special. Most other hens will try to kill any babies that aren't their own, and few will except new chicks. The ones that do usually need to have the chicks slipped under them at night, so that they think they have hatched out their clutch in the morning.

Anyway, they say a picture is worth a thousand words, and certainly I cannot describe these chick's cuteness levels adequately in so many words. So I'll leave you with the photos, wish you a good weekend and also pop the link in for the pictures of last year's chicks (you've really got to take a look).

Happy chicken-gazing!

Sarah x

  1. They are rather sweet. Chicks in Autumn? They wouldn't survive the weather here, I am guessing you don't have cold winters!

    1. It gets cold enough for me, but no nothing compared to the weather in other parts of Australia. We come close to frost in winter, and our property in particular gets extremely windy which drops the temperature. I try not to set chicks any later than May as June and July in particular are just too cold :-)

  5. How cute! There is something about baby chicks isn't there? We are expecting a couple of guinea fowl babies at work (preschool) this week if we're lucky. Fingers crossed...xx

  6. Oh, how precious! We don't have chickens ourselves (our deed forbids us from having any livestock), but several of my daughter's friends are involved in an agricultural program called 4H, and they have been raising chicks for the past couple of years. I just love that last picture -- so sweet!
