Meet Mister Boobook - our new found owl-friend. He decided to take his day's sleep in our Bottlebrush Tree, the same spot the Sunbirds decided to nest.
The poor Sunbirds are most distressed at his presence. They're worried for their nest, and they have been trying to shoo this visitor all day.
And now the poor Owl isn't getting much sleep. How could he, with two pesky birds flitting about him, talking very loudly?

Now of course I don't mind him being here. I've had a love for owls long before the currant owl-trend developed. I'm glad he's here for the day, and I keep going to the verandah to take a peek at him.
I love his big black eyes. I also love that I'm constantly discovering more birds on our property. There's so much wildlife here, the only downside being that there is the predators to go with it! (Another snake was sighted this morning. A nasty Taipan. Luckily he wasn't feeling aggressive - I backed away slowly before fleeing back up the hill to the safety of the house!)

What do you think of our feathered friend?
Is he not cute?
I think he is!

PS. A big thank-you to everyone who took part in the Tea Party linky! It made my day :-)

He is seriously cute! My great grandma nana collected owls and I have always liked them as well. I'd love for one to come hang out at my house!
ReplyDeleteOhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh - I think he is MORE than wonderful! He looks very soft - I'm sure he probably took care of the snake, too! Happy Valentines Day - stay away from things that slither! Tanya
ReplyDeleteWow! He's beautiful! How lucky you are to get such a close look at him. And, to get photos!
ReplyDeleteI've not seen an a owl with such big eyes! What a treat to have him so close, even if only for one day. Snakes, I'd rather not have them around....
ReplyDeleteIt was a treat indeed! And I agree with you on the snakes :-)
DeleteHe is so adorable! I hope both he and the sunbirds got some rest - just the mention of that taipan gave me the shivers! Hopefully it doesn't come back.
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful to have him sit there and be able to watch him through the day, lovely photos you've managed to get of him too. Jay
ReplyDeleteHe IS adorable, but I hope he's not going to attack your sunbirds at night :o We had a Great Horned Owl living in our woods when I was a kid. As soon as I heard the crows making a raucous, I knew the owl was around, and I would creep down to the woods to get a glimpse of my owl (before I had a camera, so all the memories of him are in my head only). Wendy
ReplyDeleteHow lovely! And you'll be pleased to hear that Mama Sunbird was back in her nest this morning, in good health and happy that her visitor had left! :-)
DeleteAw, he's so lovely - I hope he stays for awhile :-)
ReplyDeleteHappy day to you,
xx
He's wonderful! A couple of years ago a family of owls move into my husband's barn. He and our son would go out at night to catch mole crickets to give to the owl family. They accomplished this by throwing the crickets under our security light where the owl parents would find the insects, swiftly I might add. The owls came to expect their treats and raised a fine young owl. One day my husband returned to his barn and found the young owl sitting, perched, on the top of a folding ladder. Husband needed the ladder, so he stuck his finger in front of the little owl, near his feet. The fledgling stepped right on his finger and stayed long enough for me to arrive and take his picture, posing on my husband's hand. The very next day the entire family flew away. I think it was the junior owl's way of saying thanks for all the crickets!
ReplyDeleteWow! What a lovely story :-) I wish our owl had let us get that close! x
DeleteHi is so cute, would love him to visit our house! We have Moreporks in our tree. It's a native New Zealand owl and is alot smaller than the average sized owl. We never see him, only hear him. Nice to know it's there though. x
ReplyDeleteWhat a cut "hoot"!
ReplyDeleteI think he is adorable! Let us know if he decides to stay or if the other birds win out. Hope your day was lovely. xo
ReplyDeleteHe is so beautiful! My son is totally freaked out by owls -- their big eyes and the fact that they can rotate their heads full circle. :) He's 14 years old, so you would think he'd be over that kind of stuff. I love bird watching -- we don't have that many different varieties (I'm sure there are more out in the desert areas) but I am happy just to watch those that we do have flitting about each and every day. Best wishes to you, Tammy
ReplyDeleteHi Sarah I love owls too-you captured some wonderful photos
