February on Paper

At the beginning of the month I decided to start a book.
Not write a book, no, I've tried that and failed miserably! I had decided to make a book.
In this book I would put things that were inspiring me; I would collect bits and bobs for it, and I would record some of the happenings of the month in it. I would devote a page or two to each month, and continue with it throughout the year.

I had on hand a plain notebook, so I decided to use it as my base.
This book would be part scrapbook, part inspiration board and part journal.

And so I began. At the beginning of February I was in love with all things denim and lace, so these were added.
February was typed using my typewriter, on a scrap from an old book.
Gumnuts, lavender flowers and grass stalks were added.
A fabric scrap and one of my favourite buttons.
An owl was stamped, to represent the coming and going of Mr Boobook
Notes were added, foam rain clouds glued, along with the prototype tag of my new packaging.

Slowly the page became more and more crowded, and the book wouldn't close (courtesy of the gumnuts, I think). I stitched a wooden button to the back and front, and used a piece of twine to keep the cover shut.

At the end of the year I will have a book filled with notes and other bits and pieces. I will have an 2013 Inspiration Journal, something I can keep and look back through in the years to come. I just wish I'd thought of this book in January, as it will be the only month missing.

Why not make and Inspiration Journal of your own? It's better than a mood board, more fun than Pinterest, and is something that the creative side of you will enjoy.

What little notes do you have from February?

xx

  1. I think this is a wonderful idea. My professor in art school made us keep a journal throughout the semester. I love looking back it at and seeing where I was. I was thinking of doing this on a small scale for my kids....It is so cool that you are making this! We need to hold on to paper, pen, and books...I just don't believe everything should be about the computer...I would love for my kids to learn to keep a journal. Like you said it is more gratifying then pinterest because you can touch it and hold it!!!

    1. I was encouraged to start a journal as a 8 year old - I read it now and laugh! I think kids would definitely enjoy this sort of journaling :-)

  2. I love this idea, but I wouldn't be very good at keeping it up. You have some lovely ideas in it already ... I think it's cute that you already have trouble keeping it closed ;) imagine what it'll be like at the end of the year. Did your beautiful owl finally leave? I hope he didn't have a tummy full of the sunbirds(?). Wendy

    1. Yes, the owl flew away that evening, and sunbirds were happily back in their nest the next morning. Thanks for your lovely comment!

  3. If you want to make a chunky inspiration book, try a three ring binder. It isn't as lovely as what you have but it will hold several pages of gumnut sized inspiration! This is a fab idea! Have fun at the zoo breakfast ~ that sounds like so much fun!

    1. Thanks Stacy :-) I probably would have been better with a bigger book but liked the look of this one :-) I hope to have some pictures of the zoo visit to share on my blog next week.

  4. What a lovely idea. I try to write or stick something every day on an index card, though after only two months they're taking up far more room than I planned. You're right - so much better than pinterest.

  12. A really lovely idea. A book like this can be passed on down through the generations. I have a journal from my husband's great grandmother. She had quite the life, widowed with a newborn baby, fleeing an abusive 2nd husband, raising her children on her own in the late 19th and early 20th century. Not something you are going to find on Facebook or Pinterest.

    1. That sounds absolutely fascinating Susan! I think it would be great if more people kept diaries for future generations to look back and learn from!

  13. I love this - it's absolutely gorgeous! I think it's so much fun and a little olde world to keep daily or monthly scrapbooks, like a visual diary! It will give you something to really look back on! :-)
